世帯主は、世帯の家や住居に対して法的責任を持つ人で、一般的には家庭の代表者や主な責任者を指します。

Usage Notes (Japanese)

「世帯主」は主に公的書類や申請等で使われる正式な言葉で、日常会話ではあまり使いません。「家の主」や「家主」とは使われる場面が異なります。
