段階やグラデーションは、色や質、強さなどの異なるレベルや状態の間にある微妙な変化やステップを指します。

主に美術や科学などの専門的な場面で使用されます。物理的な段（階段など）には使わず、色や音の微妙な違いを表現する時に使います。
