개인이나 집단, 공동체를 특징짓는 가치관이나 정신, 신념의 총체를 말한다.

주로 공식적이거나 학문적인 맥락에서 사용한다. '회사의 이토스', '팀 이토스' 등으로 쓰이며, '윤리(ethics)'와는 다르다.
