碑文（ひぶん）

Definition

亡くなった人を偲んで墓石や記念碑に刻まれる短い言葉や文章です。

主にフォーマルや文学的な場面で使われ、日常会話ではあまり使いません。'an epitaph for...'や'his/her epitaph'のような表現もあります。新聞に載る死亡記事（obituary）とは異なります。比喩的に「最後の言葉」の意味で使われることもあります。

The epitaph on her grave was very touching.

彼女の墓の**碑文**はとても感動的でした。

He wrote an epitaph for his late father.

彼は亡き父のために**碑文**を書いた。
