何かや誰かによって目立たなくなったり、重要性が薄れたりすること。また、天体のように別の物体が前を通って光を遮ることも指す。

天文学的な実際の隠蔽から比喩的に「目立たなくなった」まで、両方でよく使われます。「eclipsed by」で「〜にかすむ」のような使い方も日常的です。フォーマル・インフォーマル両方で使います。
