悲しみや落胆の気持ちを表し、顔や目線を下に向けている様子。感情と姿勢の両方を示す言葉です。

主に人や感情に使い、「downcast eyes（うつむいた目）」のような表現がよくあります。日常会話ではあまり使われず、やや文学的です。物にはほとんど使いません。

He looked downcast after hearing the disappointing news.

彼はがっかりする知らせを聞いて**うつむいた**様子だった。
