自分に自信がなく、人前で話したり行動したりすることをためらう控えめな人を指します。

「diffident」は「shy」よりもフォーマルで文語的。「diffident manner」「seem diffident」など、控えめさや自信のなさが態度や性格に現れるときに使う。瞬間的なためらいには使わない。
