거의 어떤 일을 하거나 경험할 뻔할 때, 특히 위험하거나 심각한 상황에서 사용. 결과에 거의 도달했지만 실제로 일어나지 않았을 때 쓴다.

위험하거나 극적인 상황을 표현할 때 주로 사용하며, 격식 있고 문학적인 느낌이 있다. 일반 대화에서는 드물다. 종종 'of + 동명사' 형태로 쓴다.
