何か（木や石、ガラスなど硬い物）の小さな部分を欠け取ること。

Usage Notes (Japanese)

主に物理的な物に対して文字通り使う。'chip off the old block'（親子が似ているというイディオム）と混同しないように。'chip off a piece' という形でも使われる。カジュアルまたは普通の場面で使われる。
