Intentar agarrar algo rápidamente, usualmente porque se está escapando o porque se está desesperado; también, aprovechar una oportunidad o esperanza en una situación difícil.

"Catch at" es formal o literario y poco usado en la conversación diaria. Se suele usar con objetos difíciles de alcanzar o, en sentido figurado, con oportunidades o esperanzas. Normalmente sigue con un objeto: 'catch at a chance'. No confundir con 'just catch', que sólo indica atrapar algo físicamente.
