The physical force that makes certain materials attract or repel each other, often seen with magnets. It can also mean a person's ability to attract others, like personal charm.

Usage & Nuances

Used in physics for actual magnetic forces, and metaphorically for personal attraction or charisma (“personal magnetism”). In science, always refers to the physical phenomenon. Not to be confused with “magnet” (the object). “Magnetism” is uncountable.
