어떤 사실이나 상황을 실제보다 덜 중요하거나 심각하게 표현하는 것.

공식적이고 분석, 비평, 보도에서 자주 사용됨. 'seriously understate', 'greatly understate'와 같이 쓰임. 'overstate'의 반대. 겸손하거나 신중한 태도를 나타낼 때도 사용됨.

He tends to understate his achievements at work.
