কোনো কিছুর উপরের স্তরের নিচে থাকা বা গোপন অনুভূতি, কারণ বা সত্য যেগুলো সহজে বোঝা যায় না—তা বোঝাতে ব্যবহৃত হয়।

'under the surface' ব্যবহার হয় জল, মাটি ইত্যাদির নিচে কিছু বোঝাতে, আবার কারো অনুভূতি বা গোপন বিষয় বোঝাতেও। যেমন 'There's more going on under the surface.'-এ মূলত লুকানো কিছু বোঝানো হয়।
