確信が持てず、様子を見ながら行動することや、仮に・試しに何かをすることを表します。

多くの場合、「ためらいながら〜する」「仮に〜する」など、不確実や慎重な気持ちを表す動作に使います。確定していない計画にも使われます。自信や積極性を示す場合には使いません。

She smiled tentatively at the new student.
