物質が壊れる前にどれくらい引っ張って伸ばせるかを表す語で、主に金属やロープ、ワイヤーなどの素材に対して使われます。

主に工学や科学分野で使われ、「tensile strength（引張強さ）」のような表現がよくあります。日常生活で他の「伸ばす」意味ではほとんど使いません。
