建物の中で、階段が収まっている壁などに囲まれた縦の空間を指します。

「階段室」はビルなど大きな建物の階段部分の空間を指し、一般的な家庭の階段には使いません。災害時の避難指示でもよく使われます。「階段」とは異なります。
