약속이나 위협, 또는 진심임을 강조할 때 쓰는 표현으로, 신이나 높은 존재 앞에서 맹세하는 의미가 있다.

주로 구어체이며 과장스럽거나 극적인 상황에서 사용된다. 'so help me, I'll do it!' 또는 'so help me, if you lie...'와 같은 문맥에 자주 나온다. 공식적인 글쓰기에서는 사용하지 않는다.
