罠や計略などで動物や人が捕まった、または抜け出しにくい状況に陥ったことを表します。

Usage Notes (Japanese)

ほとんど受け身で使われ、文学的またはフォーマルな表現です。日常会話ではあまり使われません。「snarl（唸る・もつれる）」と混同しないこと。
