보통 자야 할 시간에 잠들지 않고 깨어 있는 것, 특히 늦은 시간까지 잠을 참는 것을 말함.

‘remain up’은 다소 격식 있는 표현으로, 주로 'remain up late'처럼 밤늦게까지 깨어 있을 때 사용함. 친근한 'stay up'보다는 덜 흔하게 쓰임. 사물에는 사용하지 않음.

He had to remain up to finish his homework.
