공모, 일자리, 기회 등에서 본인을 공식적으로 후보로 밝히거나 지원하는 것.

실제 모자에 이름을 넣는 것이 아닌, 지원·자원함을 비유적으로 표현한 말이다. '지원하다', '후보로 나서다' 등으로 일상적으로 쓴다.
