"Offing" é a parte do mar visível da costa, mas longe da terra. Em sentido figurado, pode indicar algo que está prestes a acontecer.

É usado sobretudo em contextos literários, náuticos ou formais. 'In the offing' quer dizer 'iminente' ou 'a caminho'. Raramente aparece fora destas situações. Não confunda com 'off' ou 'offshore'. Normal em 'algo está in the offing' para indicar que algo se espera em breve.
