“Offing” 指的是从海岸能看到但距离陆地较远的海域，比喻上也可指某事即将发生。

Usage Notes (Chinese (Simplified))

多用于文学和航海语境，也用于正式场合。比喻用法“in the offing”表示“即将发生”。很少在其它情境见到。不要与“off”或“offshore”混淆。常出现于“something is in the offing”等表达中。
