교육이나 보건 등 특정 분야를 담당하는 정부의 행정 부서. 종교 단체를 의미할 때도 있지만, 주로 정부 기관을 지칭한다.

주로 '보건부', '교육부'처럼 정부의 중앙 행정부서를 가리킴. 종교적 의미는 드물다. 'minister'(장관), 'ministry'(단수)와 혼동하지 않도록 주의.
