能打开家里大门的钥匙。也常用于“钥匙儿童”，指的是在父母上班时下学后独自回家的孩子。

现代英语中“latchkey”一般只用在“latchkey child”这类表达上，指父母不在家、孩子独自照顾自己的情形。单独指“钥匙”时较为过时，现在更常用“house key”。
