Definition

水がやさしく岸などに当たる音や動き、または動物が舌でなめて飲む動作を表します。

Usage Notes (Japanese)

主に水や動物に使われ、人が飲む動作には使いません。「waves lapping at the shore」など叙述的・詩的な場面で多用されます。「lapping up」は「喜んで受け入れる」という意味にもなるので注意。
