人が社会的な場や慣れない状況で、リラックスできず緊張している状態。

Usage Notes (Japanese)

ややフォーマルで古い表現です。「uncomfortable（不快）」や「nervous（緊張）」が普段の会話でよく使われます。「He looked ill at ease」のように、他人の様子を述べる時によく使われます。
