Definition

探していなかったのに偶然何かや誰かを見つけたり出会ったりすること。たいてい予期せず何かを発見する場合に使います。

Usage Notes (Japanese)

“happen on”はややフォーマルで現代の会話ではあまり使われません。“come across”や“run into”の方が一般的です。必ず偶然を意味し、特に物・場所・人に対して使い、文章や物語でよく見かけます。
