도끼와 같은 도구로 반복적으로 내리치는 것. 또는 힘든 일을 계속해서 꾸준히 해나가는 의미로도 쓰인다.

비공식적이고 일상대화에 자주 쓰임. 'hack away at'은 어떤 일이나 물체에 계속해서 힘을 쏟는다는 의미로 쓰임. 'hack into'(해킹하다)와 혼동하지 않기.

He hacked away at the thick branches with his axe.
