Definition

가고일은 주로 중세 교회나 대성당에서 지붕의 빗물을 밖으로 내보내기 위해 설치된 괴상하거나 무서운 모양의 석상입니다. 장식용으로 쓰이기도 합니다.

주로 유럽의 고딕 양식 건축물에 쓰이며, 사람을 무서운 모습으로 비유할 때도 씁니다. "grotesque"는 오직 장식용일 때 구분합시다.
