物事や集団がいくつかの小さな部分や断片に分かれること、またはその状態。社会やシステムなどの分裂を表す時に使われます。

Usage Notes (Japanese)

主にフォーマルな場面や、IT・社会学・ビジネスなどの分野で使われます。「市場の分断（market fragmentation）」や「データの断片化（data fragmentation）」のような形でよく使います。実際のモノが壊れる場合にはあまり使いません。
