炎のように明るく燃えたり、広がったりしている様子を表します。光や火、または（鼻やズボンの裾など）広がる形にも使います。

主に描写的な文章で使われる。'flaring nostrils' は怒りで鼻の穴が広がること。'flaring pants' は裾が広がったズボンを指す。 'flashing' や 'flaring up' とは異なる意味。
