Definition

死者を悼んで葬式で歌われる、ゆっくりとした悲しい歌や音楽。

とても形式張った、文語的な表現で、日常会話ではほとんど使われません。「funeral dirge」「dirgeを歌う」など決まった使い方があります。比喩的に悲しげな音楽全般にも使えます。

The choir sang a dirge at the funeral.
