Definition

誰かを警察や当局がその場から離れられないように一時的にとどめておくこと。主に犯罪捜査や法的な理由で行われる。

Usage Notes (Japanese)

主に警察や公式な場面で使われる。「arrest」（逮捕）とは異なり、必ずしも罪に問われるとは限らない。

Examples

The police are detaining two suspects for questioning.

警察は二人の容疑者を取り調べのために**拘束しています**。

They are detaining travelers at the border.

彼らは国境で旅行者を**拘束しています**。

The officers are detaining him for further checks.
