Definition

一部の昆虫（特に蚕や毛虫）が成虫になる前に自分を包んで守るためにつくる柔らかい殻。また、比喩的に人や物事を外部から守るものにも使われる。

Usage Notes (Japanese)

主に昆虫や生物学の文脈で使われますが、「自分の殻にこもる」など比喩的にも使います。人工物には用いません。
