Definition

火が消えたあとに残る、小さくてまだ熱を持った炭や木の燃え残り。完全に灰になっていないもの。

「cinders」は昔話や暖炉、鉄道などでよく使われます。「ashes」(灰)は完全に燃え尽きたもの、「cinders」はまだ熱を持ちやすい燃え残りです。
