누군가에게 공식적으로 무언가를 요청하거나, 도움을 요청하는 것. 특정한 이유로 방문한다는 뜻도 있음.

조금은 공식적인 말투로, 연설이나 공식 요청에서 많이 쓰임(‘call upon someone to act’). 친구를 방문한다는 의미도 있음(‘call upon a friend’). ‘call up’이나 ‘call on’과 혼동하지 않도록 주의. 법률, 정치, 학술 분야에서 자주 등장.
