裏道脇道

Definition

裏道や脇道とは、主要な道路から離れた、静かであまり人が通らない道です。また、専門的またはあまり知られていない分野も指します。

道に関する場合は文学的・やや古風な表現です。「highways and byways」のようなフレーズでよく使われます。学問など分野の「裏道」という比喩表現にもなります。都市の道路には使いません。

We took the byways to avoid traffic on the main road.

私たちは渋滞を避けるために**裏道**を通りました。
