'산산조각내다'는 물리적 폭발뿐만 아니라, 생각이나 의견을 철저히 뒤엎을 때도 쓴다. 가벼운 파손엔 사용하지 않으며, 완전한 파괴를 뜻한다. 종종 구어체에서 'was/were' 뒤에 쓰인다. 'fall to pieces'와 혼동하지 말 것.
