'Astound' أقوى من 'surprise' ويستخدم في سياقات رسمية أو أدبية عادةً بأسلوب المجهول: 'was astounded'. لا يُستخدم للمفاجآت البسيطة بل للأشياء غير المتوقعة جداً أو العظيمة.
