正確ではなく、おおよそ見積もられた値や数のこと。精密な値が分からないときに使われます。

主に技術的・科学的な場面で使われ、『about』『around』よりも形式的。『おおよそ』や『推定された』などと訳される。物理的な距離には使わない。
