'Figure out' es informal y se usa mucho en inglés hablado. Normalmente se refiere a resolver problemas ('figure out the answer'), entender personas ('figure out what she wants') o planear algo. Suele ir con what/why/how o un objeto directo. No se usa como 'calcular' matemáticamente.
