밤중 중에서도 가장 조용하고 어두운 시간. 대부분의 사람들이 자고 있을 때 쓰이며, 비밀스럽거나 극적인 분위기를 연출할 때 사용된다.

'한밤중에' 또는 '한밤의 적막함 속에'와 같이 극적인 상황이나 비밀, 은밀함을 강조할 때 사용함. 일상 대화보다는 서술이나 문학에서 셈.
