अधिकतर औपचारिक, विश्लेषण या खबरों में चलता है। 'seriously understate' जैसी कोलोकेशनों के साथ आम है। 'overstate' (बढ़ा-चढ़ाकर बोलना) इसका उलट है। कभी-कभी विनम्र या सतर्क दिखने के लिए कह सकते हैं।
