A facade is the front of a building or, in a figurative sense, a false or outward appearance used to hide the true feelings or situation.

'Facade' is formal and used in both literal (architecture) and figurative (emotional) senses. In the figurative sense, it's common to hear 'put up a facade'. Not to be confused with 'face' (the body part) or 'fascia' (construction). In speech, usually pronounced 'fuh-SAHD'.
