本当の自分を隠して、偽って振る舞う人を指します。人をだますために本心を見せない場合によく使います。

Usage Notes (Japanese)

かなりくだけた否定的な意味で、人への悪口として使われます。フォーマルな場では避け、「total phonies」「bunch of phonies」のようなフレーズで使われます。人にだけ使われ、物には使いません。
