何かや誰かに対して困難に立ち向かったり、争ったり、議論で自分の主張を述べたりすること。

やや硬い表現であり、『contend with', 'contend against', 'contend for』の形で苦労や競争を表す。『contend that』は「主張する」という意味。物理的な戦いではなく、精神的・議論の場面で使う。

Several teams will contend for the championship title.
