野菜などを短時間熱湯にくぐらせた状態、または恐怖や驚きで顔色が青ざめた様子を表します。

Usage Notes (Japanese)

料理では『湯通しした野菜（blanched vegetables）』に使い、文学的には恐怖などで顔色が『青ざめた（a blanched face）』と表現します。洗う・漂白する意味では使いません。
