Definition

円形劇場とは、中央に広場があり、その周りを客席が取り囲む大きな円形または楕円形の劇場です。主に古代の公共イベントや公演、スポーツなどに使われました。

Usage Notes (Japanese)

主に古代ローマやギリシャの建築物の話題で使われますが、現代の野外ステージに使うこともあります。カジュアルな会話ではあまり使いません。イギリス英語では“amphitheatre”、アメリカ英語では“amphitheater”とつづります。
