A short stay somewhere between parts of a journey, especially when traveling by plane. It is when you pause your trip in one place before continuing to your final destination.
Usage & Nuances
Mostly used for air travel, both for short (a few hours) and long (overnight) breaks. Common phrases: "make a stopover", "have a stopover in". Not the same as "layover"; 'stopover' can be longer and might allow you to leave the airport.
