何かが完全に作り話で、事実に基づかないことを意味する表現。伝統的には一からの嘘や創作話に使う。

この表現はややフォーマルで時代を感じる言い回し。主に文章や物語で使い、「made out of whole cloth」として使われることが多い。布地と関係はない。
